Institute of Applied Life Sciences (INEB) at the National Center for Research and Technological Development (EKETA)
The Institute of Applied Biosciences (INEB) at the National Center for Research and Technological Development (EKETA) was founded in 2012 after the merger of the Institute of Agricultural Technology (INA) and the Institute of Biomedical and Biomolecular Research (IBBE). INEB actively moves towards the international upgrading of the research carried out in Greece in the broad field of life sciences and the production of innovative products of high value.
In the field of agrobiotechnology, INEB is active and contributes decisively to mapping, utilization and promotion of Greek biodiversity. In close cooperation with producers, businesses and academic bodies.
Main fields of interest for INEB are:
- Improving the prevention and management of patients with wasting diseases
- Innovative diagnosis and research of key mechanisms in cancer
- New approaches in gene and cell therapy
- Pharmacological research with a focus on bioequivalence and generic drug testing
Determinant for the implementation of the above actions is INEB’s research activity in Large-Scale Biodata Informatics and the development of appropriate computing infrastructures and applications for their management and analysis. The specific activity serves the needs for information management, analysis and understanding of the functioning of biological systems by applying cutting-edge methodologies such as Machine Learning and Deep Machine Learning.
INEB’s laboratory structures include seven fully equipped molecular biology laboratories and a P3 specification laboratory supported by the central infrastructures of functional genomics and biochemical analysis such as:
1. High performance computer cluster with approximately 1000 cores 2.5 TB RAM
2. Basic Microscopy and Image Analysis Infrastructure
3. RT-PCR systems and robotic nucleic acid isolation systems
4. Flow cytometry
5. Biochemical analysis infrastructure equipped with chromatograph and mass spectrographs
6. Nucleic acid sequencing infrastructure
In the last five years the use and exploitation of the above infrastructures in the context of services and research programs has produced more than 150 publications in international journals and collaboration with a wide network of research and academic bodies as well as companies of space.
INEB employs 10 principal researchers and more than 60 postdoctoral, doctoral candidates and postgraduate workers in research programs as research staff.
The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) is the largest Greek university.
The main campus is located in the center of the city and extends over an area of approximately 430,000 m2, while some of its facilities, either educational or administrative, are located outside the campus or in other cities.
In total it includes 10 schools, made up of 40 departments and 1 single-department school.
61 Clinics (Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine) operate. , 295 institutionalized Laboratories and 23 Studies. The Central Library of the University of Athens, one of the largest in the Balkans, together with the 45 regional libraries of the Departments and Schools (17 of which are institutionalized) make up the library system of the University of Athens.
1 undergraduate study programs and 92 postgraduate study programs in individual departments, but also interdepartmental, interuniversity and international. There are still 23 collaborations with foreign Institutions for the preparation of doctoral theses, Greek and foreign doctoral candidates with co-supervision.
Currently 73,930 students study in its Schools and Departments, of which 65,026 attend undergraduate study programs and 8,472 postgraduate programs (of which, 3,952 are PhD candidates).
The Teaching and Research Staff (D.E.P.) amounts to 2,024 people, the Laboratory Teaching Staff (E.D.P. ) to 287 people and the Special Educational Staff to 53. 134 members of the Special Technical Laboratory Staff (ETEP) also assist in the educational work, while 245 permanent employees work in the administration and 294 with a Private Law Indefinite Term relationship ( I.D.A.X.)
